The Average Aussie Spends Too Much Time Sitting
We’ve recently discussed the numerous health problems associated with sedentary behaviour, and how a lifestyle lacking physical activity can shorten your life expectancy. Despite many public awareness campaigns, the latest National Health Survey shows some alarming trends.
Using large-scale data from all over the country, the survey shows that only 43% of adults in Australia engage in enough physical activity to meet the recommended guidelines. This problem was most severe amongst older age groups.
Those with office jobs averaged 22 hours per week sitting at their desks, which shows the potential for employers to tackle this issue and promote the health of their staff.
However, sitting at work is only part of the equation. The biggest culprit? Television.
The average Aussie adult spends an astounding 29 hours per week sitting down, not including time spent sitting at work (which averaged a further 10 hours, across all occupations).
