Managing remote and hybrid teams: training for connected leadership

Hybrid work may be established, but leading it well is not automatic. Managers must build trust, maintain connection, recognise when someone is struggling and create fair accountability, often without having the whole team in one room.

Managing Remote & Hybrid Teams is an HSG workplace training program that equips managers to lead distributed teams through clear communication, inclusive team practices, trust, accountability and wellbeing. It can be delivered onsite or online as a single workshop or tailored series.

Remote and hybrid team meeting

Strong hybrid teams start with capable managers

Hybrid arrangements can work well, but they leave less room for vague expectations, inconsistent communication and proximity-based decisions. When managers are not equipped to lead across distance, trust, inclusion and accountability can become uneven.

Practical manager training can help teams create clearer communication, fairer expectations and stronger connection across locations.

Manager leading a team session

Leadership workshop

What the workshops involve

Sessions are practical and discussion-led, built around the real situations managers face. Participants learn how to:

  • run inclusive meetings that give remote and onsite team members an equal voice;
  • set clear expectations and accountability without micromanagement or surveillance;
  • strengthen trust, communication and connection across locations;
  • recognise when a team member may be struggling and respond appropriately; and
  • reduce proximity bias and support fair access to feedback, recognition and development.

Programs are available as 90-minute workshops, half-day intensives or ongoing series. Content can be tailored to the organisation’s operating model, tools and team structure.

Delivery is available onsite in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra, across regional Australia, and in New Zealand and Asia-Pacific locations. Virtual delivery is available nationwide, throughout New Zealand and across Asia-Pacific.

Outcomes you can expect

HSG can report on attendance, participation, staff feedback and participants’ reported confidence and usefulness after delivery. Managers also leave with a practical action, communication rhythm or team norm to apply in their next meeting.

Over time, stronger remote and hybrid leadership capability can support trust, engagement, retention, collaboration and the equitable inclusion of dispersed staff. These are business-aligned outcomes rather than guaranteed results from a single workshop.

What clients say

Merv Neal hosted an engaging and insightful workshop on managing teams during COVID times. We were given some tips and also encouraged to think about the specific needs of our team and develop our own strategies which would work best in our situation. Thank you Merv for helping us with some great strategies that we are working towards to help us get through these challenging times.

It was really nice to be able to have all our team from all over the world join the session with our facilitator for a Stress/Resilience presentation via Zoom, and to be able to make it available for those who were unable to join us at the time via a recording.

The team at Holistic Services Group were very helpful and considerate to our needs and what we wanted out of the presentation and organised everything for us very smoothly!

It is designed for managers leading hybrid or fully remote teams, managers of multi-site or multi-time-zone teams, and leaders preparing their people for a new way of working. It suits both newly remote managers and experienced leaders.

A policy establishes parameters, but it does not give managers the practical skills to communicate, build trust, manage performance and include people fairly across different locations. Training helps managers translate the policy into consistent day-to-day leadership practices.

HSG reports on attendance, participation and staff feedback. Our experience shows that over time, stronger remote and hybrid leadership can support engagement, retention, collaboration and the equitable inclusion of dispersed staff. We focus on realistic, evidence-informed outcomes.
