Team cooking experiences that build real connection

Few things bring a team together like cooking and sharing a meal. A shared kitchen turns colleagues into collaborators, and a meal that a team has made into a real sense of achievement. It is hands-on, genuinely fun, and one of the simplest ways a team can support connection and communication together.

Team Cooking Experiences are interactive, facilitated corporate cooking classes offered by Holistic Services Group that use the shared challenge of preparing a meal to build communication, collaboration and connection within a team. Sessions are delivered onsite at a venue across Australia, include a full meal, and can be tailored to team-building, reward, or staff-development goals.

Why shared experiences matter to a team

Connection is not a nice-to-have. When engagement slips, it shows up as weaker collaboration, lower morale and higher turnover, and positive shared experiences are one of the simplest ways to support the trust and communication a team depends on, especially after change, growth or long stretches of remote work.

  • Global engagement at its lowest since 2020: only 20% of employees worldwide were engaged at work in 2025, and Gallup estimates low engagement cost the global economy close to US$10 trillion in lost productivity, according to Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2026.
  • Engaged teams perform measurably better: highly engaged business units show 23% higher profitability and, in organisations with annual turnover of 40% or less, 51% lower employee turnover than the least engaged units. Read Gallup’s 2024 analysis.

A single cooking experience will not shift an organisation-wide engagement figure on its own, but it sits within the everyday pattern of connection-building that this broader research points to.

Who it is for

Team Cooking Experiences suit whole teams and intact work groups, cross-functional teams that need to work better together, teams reconnecting after change or remote work, and groups gathering for a conference, offsite or staff celebration. They also make a memorable reward for a team that has delivered.

What happens on the day

Sessions are hands-on and run in a relaxed, informal setting that encourages people to work together naturally. In teams, participants plan, delegate and prepare a full meal against the clock, then sit down and enjoy it together. The experience is designed to help participants practise communicating and collaborating under time pressure, appreciate each other’s strengths and working styles, and carry a shared success back into everyday work. The experience can be run purely for fun and connection, or shaped around specific outcomes, with a menu tailored to your group and budget.

  • A full meal that your team prepares and then shares together
  • A choice of menus to suit your group and budget, using fresh, locally produced ingredients where possible
  • Cooking stations equipped with everything needed, so no kitchen is required at your workplace
  • All set-up, cleaning and washing up handled for you
  • An indoor activity, so it runs regardless of the weather
  • Dietary requirements, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free, can be catered for

Venue, transport, and drinks are not included in the standard package, but we are happy to arrange them on request.

Three ways teams use a cooking experience

Team building and bonding

The shared challenge becomes a practical metaphor for everyday work, where planning, communication and time management are what get a difficult task across the line.

A reward that gives back

A genuine thank-you for your team, with the experience designed to help people return to work feeling more connected and energised.

Team development in action

The time-bound challenge gives participants a low-pressure opportunity to practise planning, delegation, communication and adapting together.

Outcomes you can expect

After delivery, HSG can report on attendance, participation and staff feedback, and qualitative comments from participants often describe feeling more relaxed, energised and reconnected by the end of the session.

Over time, shared team experiences can support communication, collaboration, morale, engagement and retention, the everyday foundations of a team that works well together.

The business case is well evidenced: highly engaged business units show 23% higher profitability and, in organisations with annual turnover of 40% or less, 51% lower employee turnover than the least engaged units (Gallup, 2024).

Team building activity and group engagement

Featured client story: a multi-office team breaks down barriers

Challenge: a diverse team spread across different offices, with a wide range of ages, seniority, tenure, fitness and mobility, wanted to communicate better and break down the geographical and hierarchical barriers that had grown between them.

Program: a facilitated team cooking workshop where the group planned a healthy menu together, split into teams to take responsibility for each course, and coordinated the kitchen, equipment and timing, with healthy-eating education and team-building exercises woven through the session.

Outcome, in the client’s words:

Holistic Services helped us to create and manage a team building event that was a great success for a diverse team of males and females with varying levels of fitness, mobility and seniority. With a high end health focus, we came together to prepare a feast which was healthy to eat, easy to prepare and gave instruction for replicating the menu success again. Their facilitators communicated both office health and general life improvements and were flexible enough to cater for a range of tastes and preferences.
