Common workplace wellbeing challenges in professional services

Professional services firms share a distinct set of pressures:

  • Long hours and the fatigue and recovery demands they bring
  • Performance pressure and the weight of targets and billable expectations
  • Client demands and deadlines that can be hard to control
  • Hybrid work and keeping teams connected across in-office and remote days
  • Retention and competition for talent

Why it matters for professional services

Professional services firms rely on people sustaining high-quality work through demanding deadlines, client expectations and periods of intense workload. When that pressure is not managed well, the effects can extend beyond individual wellbeing to absence, retention and consistent client delivery.

Featured client story: Barry Nilsson Lawyers

Challenge: a law firm supporting staff wellbeing amid demanding, deadline-driven work, with practical content people would actually use.

Program: a nutrition and wellbeing session delivered by a specialist facilitator, applicable to everyday working life.

Outcome, in the client’s words:

I thought the session was fantastic and some people I have spoken with have said the same. Jo was super informative and explained things in a way that was really easy to digest (pun not intended!). It helps so much knowing the actual science behind what everything does for you.

What professional services teams say

Sharon ran just a 30 minute laughter workshop for a group of cynics and we JUST LOVED IT. We had around 16-18 staff, aged from early twenties to late fifties and it was a fantastic workshop. Everyone really enjoyed it and we have continued to talk about afterwards and to share our hilarious experience with other teams. It is THE most cheering group activity I’ve ever participated in. Thank you Sharon!

Workplace wellbeing trends in the professional services sector

Professional services wellbeing is moving toward ongoing programs that account for demanding schedules and high-pressure periods. Five themes are shaping that shift:

  • Long hours increase burnout risk: sustained billable-hours pressure and hard-to-control client deadlines can place ongoing demands on employees, affecting both wellbeing and the quality of work produced.
  • Hybrid work is reshaping support: firms are focusing connection and culture initiatives on in-office days, while building practical recovery support around intense periods such as reporting season or major client matters.
  • Wellbeing supports talent retention: as firms compete for skilled people, visible and credible wellbeing support is increasingly becoming part of the employee value proposition rather than an optional extra.
  • Psychosocial obligations apply: high job demands are a recognised psychosocial hazard. Employers must eliminate psychosocial risks or, where that is not reasonably practicable, minimise them through appropriate controls such as work design, workload management, supervision and support, according to Safe Work Australia’s Model Code of Practice: Managing Psychosocial Hazards at Work (2022).
  • Global engagement continues to decline: only 20% of employees worldwide were engaged at work in 2025, the lowest level since 2020 and below the 23% peak recorded in 2022, according to Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2026 report.
