Never been a better time for workplace meditation training?
Strange as it may seem, the Coronavirus epidemic has produced the ideal circumstances for organisations to train their staff in mindfulness / meditation. There has never been a better time for businesses to invest in meditation.
Why? There are three main reasons:
- More Employee Input – higher return on investment
The main reason is that mindfulness / meditation is a skill that improves with practice. Therefore, as an employer, what you’d like to do is to make a relatively small investment in a workplace meditation training program, which plants a seed that your employees take home and keep investing in for the rest of their lives. Businesses, get the greatest return on investment when they provide the initial training, then employees see the benefit, and continue practicing meditation in their own time. It’s a win-win for employer and employee!
While many people have always wanted to start a regular meditation practice, fitting it into their busy schedules has been a common barrier. However, now that their entire social schedule has been cancelled, and they’re stuck at home with nothing to do, they finally have the time! Some people might even welcome meditation as something new and interesting to break the boredom of their, new hermit lifestyle. - Lower Cost – higher return on investment
When investing in training, businesses always consider the costs versus the benefits. And the costs aren’t just the price of the training; you also need to consider the cost of the lost work that isn’t being done while employees are attending the training. With the current downturn in economic activity, many companies are finding that their staff aren’t fully occupied anyway, and therefore, the cost of lost production is currently zero. Other employees are unable to perform all their normal work tasks from their home and therefore, have spare time on their hands. Better to use that spare time to learn a valuable skill that will save money and increase productivity into the future. - Reducing Stress and Improving Mental Health
For many people, the fear of COVID-19 has significantly increased their stress levels, and high stress leads to reduced productivity. Meditation is a great way to reduce stress. For some people who live alone, the enforced isolation can be very difficult to cope with and may drive them towards depression. Meditation can help them find some peace and reduce their negative thoughts.
Once people succumb to depression, it can be hard to get back out, so even after the social isolation is over, for some people, the mental health issues may continue. Therefore, it makes sense for businesses to make a small investment up-front to try to prevent the longer term mental health issues from developing.

The ideal meditation kick-starter program
The ideal outcome for an employer is that their employees establish a habit of regular meditation. The best way to achieve this is to:
- Start off with an Introduction to Meditation webinar that will give your employees the basic skills and explain the benefits, so that they’re incentivised to continue their meditation practice.
- Follow-up with at least 2 Meditation Classes / Webinars, during work time, in the following fortnight. This way, meditation stops being an unusual thing they tried once, and becomes a more familiar thing that they feel more comfortable with, and has started to become a bit of a routine. The more times you get your employees to meditate, the more entrenched the habit will become. So, in a way, having made the up-front investment in the basic meditation training, it makes sense to invest a little more in the follow-ups, so that you maximise the benefits of the initial investment.
