World Mental Health Awareness Day
Tomorrow is World Mental Health Awareness Day, and you’ve just taken your first step towards taking an active role in your own mental wellbeing! Mental health conditions plague people worldwide, and as a result, these sufferers can experience depravation of many of their basic human rights. By taking charge of your mental wellbeing and becoming involved in the awareness of mental health and the issues that can reside therein, one can play an active role in their own health as well as the dignity and mental wellbeing of their fellow humans.

This year’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Day is ‘Dignity in Mental Health’. The World Health Organization (WHO), “will be raising awareness of what can be done to ensure that people with mental health conditions can continue to live with dignity, through human rights oriented policy and law, training of health professionals, respect for informed consent to treatment, inclusion in decision-making processes, and public information campaigns.”
But before we can address the issue of dignity, we first should visit the topic of mental health issues as well as seeing what can be done to reduce their likelihood. While many mental health issues can be attributed in part to genetics, there are a multitude of factors that play into the manifestation of these disorders.

Stressors in the environment such as diet, worklife, and schedule management can even play a role in one’s experience of mental health disorders – and to the extent that they experience these disorders in general. In a recent study (cited above), researchers found that healthier diets consisting of nuts, legumes, fruits, and veggies played a role in one’s risk of depression.
To combat one’s likelihood of experiencing mental health disorders, there are a variety of preventative measures that can be taken. While you can’t necessarily change your genetics, you CAN play an active role in your mental health. Nutrition Seminars are available to guide you towards a healthier diet and lifestyle, which can impact your risk of mental disorders. Empower yourself to make wiser choices about the foods you eat and improve your long-term health.
