We’ve recently discussed the numerous health problems associated with sedentary behaviour, and how a lifestyle lacking physical activity is associated with reduced life expectancy. The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Australian Health Survey (2011–12) showed some notable trends that remain relevant for workplaces today.

Using large-scale data from all over the country, the survey found that only 43% of adults in Australia engaged in enough physical activity to meet the recommended guidelines at that time. This problem was most severe amongst older age groups.

Those with office jobs averaged 22 hours per week sitting at their desks, which shows the potential for employers to tackle this issue and promote the health of their staff.

However, sitting at work is only part of the equation. The biggest culprit? Television.

The average Aussie adult spent an astounding 29 hours per week sitting down, not including time spent sitting at work (which averaged a further 10 hours, across all occupations), according to the ABS Australian Health Survey (2011–12).
